Storing Chromebooks over the summer- Best Practices

  • Prior to Long-Term Storage:
    1. Update the device to the latest version of Chrome OS and charge the battery to at least 80% full.
    2. To place the device into a low-power, battery disconnect state:
      1. Connect the device to a charger and turn it on.
      2. Hold Refresh and Power at the same time.
      3. While holding these keys, remove the power cable from the device, then release the keys. The device should shut down and remain off.
      4. Attempt to power the unit on using the power button. If it does not power on, storage is safe. If it powers on, repeat steps 2 through 4.
  • Upon Redeploying:
    1. Connect the Chromebook to a charger and power source to exit the battery disconnect state and power up.
    2. Connect to WiFi and update to the latest Chrome OS release. Note that this can take time if multiple OS versions have been released since the last update.
