301 Budget Blueprint: Part 4
💵 301 Budget Blueprint: What Keeps Us Moving? The Transportation Fund.
In this week’s edition of 301 Budget Blueprint, we’re taking a closer look at how Central 301 keeps thousands of students moving every day — safely and efficiently — thanks to the Transportation Fund.
🚌 What Is the Transportation Fund?
This fund is dedicated to getting students to and from school — whether that’s daily routes, field trips, or special education transportation. As Central 301 continues to grow, our transportation operations must expand and adapt too.
🚍 What Does It Pay For?
The Transportation Fund covers both the human and operational sides of school transit:
- Salaries & Benefits: For bus drivers, transportation aides, mechanics, and office staff.
- Vehicle Costs
- Bus leases
- Fuel
- Maintenance, repairs, tires, and radios
- Insurance and safety requirements
- Contracted Services: When extra routes or specialized transportation needs arise.
- Routing Software & Operations: Tools and systems that help us map out efficient and safe routes across our 83-square-mile district.
💡 How Is It Funded?
The Transportation Fund receives money from:
- Property Taxes (local levy)
- State transportation reimbursements (both regular and special education)
- Interest income
- Field trip and activity-related transportation fees
🚦Why It Matters
A reliable transportation system means students start and end their school day safely and on time. In a fast-growing district like ours, transportation must constantly evolve to keep pace with increased enrollment, route complexity, and geographic expansion.
Investing in this fund ensures we keep buses on the road, students in the classroom, and safety front and center.
