WWII Veteran Brings History to Life at Prairie View

100-year-old veteran and grandfather shares a timeless lesson on service and family

Students at Prairie View Grade School experienced a moment they’ll never forget this Veterans Day when World War II veteran Herbert Booth, age 100, visited his granddaughter’s kindergarten classroom.

Born on May 17, 1925, Mr. Booth was the eldest of 11 children. He was called to serve on October 30, 1943, joining the 245th Combat Engineer Company A, 2nd Platoon at Camp Shelby, Mississippi. After training in Tennessee, he served under General George S. Patton, with his military journey taking him through England, France, and Germany — including a posting in Dachau, where he witnessed the aftermath of the concentration camps shortly after their liberation. He was honorably discharged in April 1946 after proudly serving his country.

Mr. Booth’s visit — made even more special through his connection to Mrs. Amy Iwanski’s kindergarten class — gave students the opportunity to meet a living piece of history. Through photos, smiles, and quiet awe, the children learned what courage, sacrifice, and service truly mean.

Central 301 is deeply honored to have hosted Mr. Booth, whose story reminds us that freedom is built by generations of bravery and compassion.
